If you love books, enjoy interacting with other book lovers, and have a little free time, we have some fun and interesting volunteer opportunities.

To become a volunteer, fill out our application. You can also call the Friends office at 795-3763 or send us an e-mail at  fpcpl@qwest.net

You don’t have to be a member of the Friends of TPPL to volunteer, but we hope you will.  Together we do remarkable things to support the public library.

Many people think that volunteering means investing a lot of time. But we have a need for “short-term” volunteers to help us with the book sales. Just signing up for a couple of 4 hour shifts is a tremendous help. Below is a list with general descriptions of the jobs needed for a book sale.

Greeter
– Greet customers, hand out maps, answer the phone, provide information on category locations, discount specials, and other book sale details.

Floor – Pull books from stock areas and place on shelves, put “go-back” books back onto shelves.

Reader – Sort customers’ selections and fill out tally sheets, bag customers’ books.

Cashier – Ring up sales according to tally sheets, handle money, run credit card transactions.

Checker – Hand out exit promotional materials, verify that items were paid for.

Parking – Direct customers to available parking.

Patio – Keep patio clean, put “go-back” books on cart so they can be returned to shelves.

Our volunteers do need some training. Let us know if you’re interested so that we can get you scheduled appropriately.

p.s. Volunteering has its perks: for every full shift you work, you receive a thank-you dollar and six ½ price coupons for your own book purchases.

Book Cart Volunteers Needed

Many of you have seen the Friends’ book carts or shelves where customers can purchase books at some of the library branches. This has been a great success for the Friends and the libraries. We have requests from other libraries to have a “Friends’ Store” in their branch, but we need volunteers who are willing to spend 4-6 hours a week selecting books from the warehouse, stocking the shelves at the branch, collecting the money and turning it in at the warehouse.

The next library that we would like to open retail space in is the Main Library downtown. If this is your local branch and you’d like to help out the Friends, please consider volunteering to help with a book cart. Please call Marcia Winick at 886-9919 for more information.

Thank You Warehouse and Book Sale Volunteers!

Our hard working volunteers have made it a wonderful year for the Friends.
Thank you for your generous donation of time.  It is a limited commodity and so all the more precious.

Volunteers contributed a total of 19,426 over our fiscal year from July 2004 – June 2005.  The book sale required 7,107 hours of volunteer time.

384 book sale volunteers
contributed 1,647 hours of behind the scenes work including telephoning, cash counting and setup and 5460 hours for the sale itself.

123 volunteers provided 12,319 hours of labor working year round in the warehouse pricing, sorting, boxing and otherwise processing books for the sale, sold books online or at our retail outlet in Geraniums Antiques and Interiors.

Because of the generosity of so many volunteers, the library received $200,000, the largest donation ever made by the Friends. We could never have done it without you.

Thank you every one!

Volunteer Opportunities

Check out the opportunities below, and see how they fit you.  If you find something that suits you, give us a call.  If you don’t find just the right job, but want to help anyway, phone 795-3763 to discuss the many other opportunities available.  Training is provided for all volunteer positions.  If you love books, volunteering for the Friends is the perfect volunteer opportunity.  We have lots of fun; you can buy books all year; you’ll meet other book lovers and be supporting a great cause.

The Online sales team is looking for individuals to research the value of books and list them online.  If you like customer service, you can help with the actual sale of books and communicate with customers via email. You can help package up sold books and take them to the post office. If you have basic computer skills, we’ll teach you what you need to know.

Work the book sale. Three to four hours, three times a year. Take more shifts if you want.  There are sit-down jobs requiring little or no physical effort, or you can stock shelves and haul 40 pound boxes.  Want more responsibility, but only have a little small amount of time?  Become a shift captain. Many hands make light work.

Guess how many members we have.  Not nearly enough.  Help us be at the right place and the right time to recruit new members.  Join the Membership or Marketing Committee.

Price and sort books for the sale.  Volunteers work all year to prepare books for the book sale.  If you love books, we will teach you everything you need to know.  A minimum commitment of three hours per week for two months is required.  There are four shifts to choose from: Monday, Tuesday or Thursday from 8a.m. to 12p.m. or Thursday evening from 6 – 9 p.m.

Benefits for Volunteers

Your efforts support really cool programs and services at the public library targeting literacy and a lifetime of learning.

Book sale volunteers
For every shift you work, receive a $1 off coupon good toward the purchase of books. You may also “cherry pick” up to 6 books per shift, stash them in the back room and pay for them on half price day. Who says volunteering doesn’t pay?

Warehouse volunteers
Meet other book lovers. Access books as soon as they come in. You may buy up to 6 books per shift. We have a catered holiday party and for those who work 100 hours or more during the year, we’ll take you to lunch.  If you love books, this is a great place to volunteer.
