Friends Contribute $200,000 to TPPL

The time and hard work our dedicated volunteers donate to the operation of the Friends, have helped us raise enough money to give the library $200,000 for this fiscal year, July 2004 to June 2005. With the help of hundreds of volunteers and a board of directors with the vision to see the potential of the organization, our contribution to the library has grown steadily for many years.

This year’s contribution is slightly more than we might expect in future years because of a bequest we received from the estate of Louise L. Rucker. With her help we were able to pay off the mortgage on our buildings, invest in our infrastructure, maintain a nest egg for an unforeseen future and with the funds left over we are able to up our ante to the library by a few thousand dollars to a nice round $200,000 for programs and services.
The following is the spending breakdown:

$40,000 - Enhanced Electronic Collections Electronic databases with remote access provide access to proprietary information that is not available on the Internet for free.

$25,000 - Love to Read Nancy Pearl, former Director for the Center of the Book in Seattle, WA will host a program on book clubs, provide staff training on conducting book talks and matching the right book to each reader. Book Club kits will be built and access will be provided to a Novel List that integrates book descriptions into the catalog.

$15,000 - Tucson Writers' Project, aimed at fostering creative writing talent and promoting literature, publishing and the humanities in our community.

$12,000 - Summer Reading Program

$12,000 - Ready to Read

$15,150 - Other Literacy Programming including homework help, tutoring workshops and Project LIFT

$16,800 - Technology including LCD projectors and wireless mics.

$10,015 - Additional youth programming including Teen Advocacy, Teen Art Invitational, puppet stages, the Book of Me and more.

$10,000 - Steinheimer and Arizona collections - These special collections include all children's materials on the Southwest. Funding goes not only for the purchase of such items but also for their maintenance and preservation.

$8,000 - GLBT (Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Taskforce) Services Committee - Committee activities range from bringing authors to Tucson to give free lectures to arranging special book displays and dispensing free library and committee promotional items.

$7,800 - "Nuestras Raíces," A Chicano Author and Film Festival, features Latin
American authors, books and films. This event, held at the Main Library, takes place in March. Other smaller-scale events may be scheduled for library branches serving a high percentage of Spanish-speaking patrons.

$10,800 - Southwest Literature Project Lawrence Clark Powell Lecture, Keepsakes and SW Books of the Year - Every year this lecture event features authors who speak about the influence of Lawrence Clark Powell and the Southwest on their writing. Lecture-associated costs include travel, stage rental, and promotional literature publicizing this event.

$5,000 - The Coexistence Project consists of a worldwide traveling exhibit of 36 outdoor posters on the theme of coexistence. The exhibit was on display on the University of Arizona Mall in February.

$5,300 - Additional life long learning programming including One Book Arizona, grants workshops and more.

$1,500 - Staff and volunteer recognition.

$5,635 - Unrestricted funds.
